Printingis a process for mass reproducing text and images using a master form ortemplate. which appeared in China before 220 AD for cloth printing. However, it would not be applied to paper until the seventh century. Woodblock printing is a technique for printingtext, images, or patterns that have spread throughout East Asia. It began inancient China as a printing process on textiles and later on paper. Theearliest surviving example from China as a method of printing on cloth datesback to before 220 AD.
Printingon paper began by the 9th century, and the first fully printed book, includingthat date, was the 868 Diamond Sutra (British Library). By the 10th century, 400,000 copies of severalscriptures and photographs were printed, and Confucian classics were printed. Experienced printers can print up to2,000 spreads per day.
Printingbecame popular in South Korea and Japan early on, where Chinese logograms werealso used, but this technique was also used in Torfan and Vietnam along withvarious other scripts. Later, this technique spread to Persia and Russia. This technique was introduced toEurope around 1400 and was used on old master prints and playing card paper.
